The best way to beat the stress of finals is to take a break and have some fun! Lucky for you, the annual Talent Show is just around the corner (Saturday, August 4 to be exact)!  Residential students will receive information about participating in the show from their P.A.  Commuter students will receive information via email.  Each P.A. cohort must have at least one act, so flex your creative muscles and be sure to volunteer to perform!  We want to see your outstanding talent!

There is no RSVP for the Talent Show, but if you would like to participate as a performer, contact your P.A. or Krysta Battersby at [email protected]!

There will be a $5.00 suggested admission donation to attend the show.  All proceeds with go to charity to support the medical costs of victims of the Aurora, Colorado shooting.

Use your talent to support charity, and we can't wait to cheer you on!

We hope all of our residential students brought enough luggage to fit the mementos they've accumulated over the duration of Precollege! We know it may be difficult to plan to leave while preparing for finals.  Our staff will be speaking with students about the moving out process to help them prepare as much as possible in advance!  We hope the below information is helpful for parents.

Precollege students living on campus must check out of Weinstein Hall no later than 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10.

Students who complete their courses and finals before August 10 may check out earlier if they wish. Students who need to stay in Weinstein until Saturday, August 11 due to extraneous circumstances should email Josh Hartman at [email protected] requesting an extended stay and explaining why they are unable to leave on August 10.  No student can stay in Weinstein Hall after August 11.

Students who plan to leave before or after August 10 should inform their P.A. or the Weinstein staff as soon as possible of the date and time they will check out so the residence hall staff can assist you.

Moving Out Procedure
Students who kept the linens provided by Weinstein will receive two garbage bags from their P.A.  One bag is for the blankets and pillows, and the second bag is for all other linens. Students should leave these bags in their rooms for collection by staff after check out. Linens should not be left in the lobby or hallways of Weinstein Hall.  Moving carts will be available to students until 6:00 p.m.on August 10 to help them pack and move their belongings.

Once students have vacated their rooms, they should submit their room keys and NYU ID to the Resource Center in the Weinstein lobby.  For security reasons, students cannot keep their NYU ID.

Late Night Checkout
Students checking out before August 10 during late night hours can do so even if the Resource Center is closed. If a student leaves past 9:00 p.m. before that Friday, he/she can see the Public Safety officer to compete the check out procedure. Students will be required to fill out a piece of paper indicating that they have vacated their room and place the piece of paper, along with their room keys and NYU ID, in an envelope to be left with Public Safety.

ALL ROOMS MUST BE LEFT THE WAY THEY WERE FOUND! Students who do not leave their rooms in a decent condition may be subject to fines. These fines will appear on the student's account with the NYU Bursar.  Unpaid fines on a student's account will restrict him/her from retrieving their transcript from NYU Precollege.

If students have any questions regarding move out, they should ask their P.A.s!

Precollege Talent Show

Precollege students had a very entertaining and educational week! Visiting the World Trade Center Memorial was an amazing opportunity. Although some have been to the memorial in Pennsylvania, being on the grounds of the Twin Towers was a very moving experience for many. On Monday, students had a chance to see what living in New York City in the early 90's was like while watching the Broadway musical Rent. The music was great, but students also learned about New York City and the changes that have occurred since they were born!  Students were also able to delve into the more distant past of the city by visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  They then had a week filled with games and fun, helping to prepare them for the Olympics! Students had the opportunity to watch the Mets play the Nationals and to play some games themselves at Dave and Buster's. The students are now ready for a weekend full of Olympics viewing, starting with the Olympics Opening Ceremony viewing party tonight!

NYU Precollege 2012 is nearing its end! The experience seems to be flying by!

Unless students drop into our offices or apply to be a NYU Precollege Ambassador, the program ends, and we never have a chance to ask students in person what they thought of NYU, NYC, and Precollege.

NYU Precollege is having a focus group on Friday, July 27th at 2:00 p.m. in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). We would like students to stop by and tell us about their experience thus far and what they would like to see change if they had the opportunity to do Precollege again. We understand that there is nothing like the student experience! We are providing a platform so that experience can be heard.

If students are interested, please email Krysta Battersby at [email protected]. You will receive a reminder email next week.

We hope to speak to several of you--we are very eager to hear what you all have to say!!!

There were several different events for the students to pick from this week. By now students should know New York like the back of their hands! Students had the opportunity to explore Brooklyn by attending the Flea Market, experience Times Square mania, and view the city from above at the top of the Empire State Building.  Others had the option of brushing up on their sciences at the Museum of National History or fill up on culture at the Guggenheim. The NYU College Fair was a success! Over 90 colleges and 350 students attended despite the torrential downpour of an impressive summer storm!  We hope students were able to talk to representatives from institutions that they were interested in, as well as learn about colleges they may not have considered before. We did a lot this week, and we look forward to another full and exciting Week Four!

NYU Precollege is halfway complete! That means it is midterm time!  Students are enjoying the challenge of college courses, but a little stress may also be felt as they tackle midterms.  We think this is the perfect time for residential students to receive care packages and commuter students to be treated to their favorite meal or a warm plate of homemade cookies! It reminds them that while they are having an amazing time in college, they are missed by and cared for by those back home.

Procedure for Care Packages
Care packages may be mailed to:
(STUDENTS NAME)
Weinstein Hall
New York University
5-11 University Place
New York, NY 10003

Please send all packages via a service provider (UPS, USPS, FEDEX, DHL, etc.). New York University policy states that, for security purposes, employees CANNOT accept packages that are not sent via a service provider or delivered in person. Although it may be convenient for you to send someone to Weinstein Hall, please understand our dedication to your student's safety and inability to accept such packages.

We look forward to students telling us what they've gotten in their care packages!

It is midterm time for students! This is the first time most students are experiencing the hustle and bustle of midterms, and we want to make sure they feel supported.

Please remind your son/daughter to review their notes with other classmates and ask their professor any questions they may have. Forming study groups with other students and speaking to professors is usually very helpful.

If your student is having a little trouble with coursework, encourage her not to wait until after the midterm examination/paper to speak to her professor. Students may also visit NYU's University Learning Center for tutoring services and study tips or the Writing Center for guidance on their papers and other written work.

These study tips and more information about these resources was shared with students during orientation. All students have a list of NYU offices, services, and resources in their orientation folders.  If they need another copy of this information, they may visit Krysta Battersby in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) located on 18 Washington Place, between Greene Street and Washington Square East.

Encourage your student to reach out for help if he needs it!  An abundance of resources and services are available!

International students--don't forget!  Today's the day you must check-in with OISS to meet the requirement set by Homeland Security.  Information about the mandatory check-in was included in a previous post below.
