Is your student homesick or in any way having difficulty adjusting to NYU Precollege?  This is very common!  NYU Precollege is a time for many "firsts" for students: first time from home, first time in New York City, first time living in a dorm with a roommate.  The experience can be overwhelming and students often long for the comfort of home.

If your student seems a little down during a phone conversation, give them a hand by reminding them that they are not alone.  Despite what they may think, many of their fellow students are feeling the exact same thing!  Also, there are many resources available to them to help them as they adjust to being in college and in the program.

First, they should attend Precollege programs and reach out to other students.  Making friends is a two-way street, and sometimes students need encouragement to be first to say hello and introduce themselves.  Our programs are excellent opportunities for students to meet new people and make connections!

Also, students feeling homesick should speak with their P.A. or another Precollege staff member.  We are very friendly and are here to help!

Finally, there are services available at NYU for students having trouble adjusting to school or living on their own for the first time.  The Wellness Exchange is a helpline staffed by counselors that help connect to counseling services and similar on campus. Counseling services are also available at the Student Health Center.  For students having trouble with classes, we have tutoring services available through the University Learning Center and Writing Center.  Mike West, their academic advisor, is also available to help with any questions or concerns about courses. Information about all these resources have been included in your student's orientation folder.

The best thing you can do if your student is feeling low is to encourage them to get out and get active!  Participating in events and meeting people or connecting with support services to help with college adjustment and class are the best ways a student can work through homesickness.

We have received quite a few overnight leave forms for residential students taking time away from NYU Precollege to be with family and friends.  Forms are available online in the NYU Precollege Handbook.

As a reminder, all requests must be made by submitting an overnight leave form.  We cannot accept emails or phone calls in lieu of a form.  Also, all forms must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance of the date of leave and no later than 12:00 p.m. on Fridays for weekend leaves. Leaves require time and planning for our residential staff.  We cannot guarantee that we will be able to process a request for leave if it is received too late.  Once a request is reviewed and processed, students receive approval notice via email.  If a student leaves campus prior to receiving this approval, he/she is at risk of violating curfew and facing disciplinary action.

Finally, students are informed when they take a leave that, by definition, a "leave" is a period of time the student chooses to remove herself from the NYU Precollege program.  As such, students cannot participate in any Precollege events during the time of their leave and are expected to remain off campus until their leave ends.  Leaves also do not excuse students from missing or late work.  They are expected to meet the requirements of their courses despite any time on leave.

If you have any questions about leaves from NYU Precollege, please email [email protected].

NYU Precollege, as a part of NYU, follows the tuition refund calendar set by the University Bursar.  If a student wishes to drop a course and receive a refund, he/she must do so by Sunday, July 8.  We recommend that students drop courses in person by the end of Friday, July 6 while the Academic Resource Center staff and their academic advisor are available to them for any questions and guidance.
Courses dropped after July 8th will not be refunded and students receive a final grade of W (withdrawal) for the class.

For more information regarding the refund schedule, please visit NYU's Bursar website.

We are so excited the students have arrived on campus!  We are thrilled to have you in the program and we look forward to spending the next six weeks with you.  From now on, all students will receive program information via email at their NYU email address.  Students should also check their Blackboard often if it is being used by their professors so they do not miss any important course information!

For the remainder of the program until August 10, this blog will serve as a means for NYU Precollege parents to stay up-to-date on what's going on each week.  We will include information about events, reminders, and tips on how parents can help make Precollege a successful experience for their students. We hope parents find the blog helpful as they, too, experience college life!

Be prepared for the start of class! Just follow the steps below!

1. Get Your NYUCard
Commuter students may have their picture taken and NYUCard printed in person at the NYU Card Center at 383 Lafayette Street on the corner of 4th Street.  When you are on campus on Friday, June 29 for orientation, you can get your card before or after orientation.  The Card Center will be open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
Residential students who submitted their ID photos online via NYUHome may get their printed NYUCards at the NYU Card Help Desk in the lobby of the Kimmel Center for University Life, 60 Washington Square South, on move-in day.  The Help Desk will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1.
Residential students who did not submit ID photos online in advance should get their NYUCards in person at the NYU Card Center first thing on Monday morning before class.
All students must show a valid government-issued photo ID in order to get their NYUCards.

2. Set Your Schedule
Residential students must be registered for two credit-bearing courses and one noncredit workshop (College Writing Workshop or Texts and Ideas).  Commuter students must be registered in at least one credit-bearing course.
All students should double-check their course registration on Albert via NYUHome.  It is best for your courses to be set by the start of classes on Monday, July 2.  The last day to add or drop a course on Albert is Sunday, July 1.

3. Get Your Books
Once your schedule is set, you can look up your textbooks online at the NYU Bookstore website.  All textbooks will be available at the NYU Bookstore.
The Bookstore will be open on Friday, July 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for commuter students on campus for orientation.
The Bookstore will be open on Sunday, July 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and residential students may get their books after move-in.

Don't forget!  Students taking College Writing Workshop should select their authors and read a few of the author's essays before the first day of class!  You don't need to read the entire book, just a selection of essays so you can discuss your author on the first day.  Fun weekend reading ahead!  And you do not need to wait to get to campus to get your books. These books are available at any bookstore such as Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com.  Information about the course, including the list of suggested authors/books, is available above under the NYU Precollege Academics page.

4. Map Out Your Schedule
Your course schedule with classroom locations will be listed on Albert.  Map out your class locations on the campus map and get to know where you need to be before class begins!
